Trudy Doyle

I was 40 years of age when diagnosed and it is a classic case of 'if I knew then what I know now'. I had noticed a very small 'stretch mark' some time earlier but as I could not feel any lump and thought I was too young I did not act quickly. In fact I only mentioned it to my Doctor as a 'by the way' matter some time later. I now know that any change whatsoever should make you go to your doctor as soon as possible and unfortunately this disease does not always present itself in a lump or has an age limit! I've had a number of surgeries and had the full works following a mastectomy - 8 rounds of Chemo, 26 doses of radiotherapy and am presently on Tamoxifen. Apart from the high risk of recurrence due to later detection I could have saved myself going through those treatments had I presented earlier.

I have had a very positive experience with all of the medical professionals I've encountered and the fact that I had private medical insurance may be a part of that. I passionately believe that all women are entitled to this level of care whether you are a public or private patient and it is obvious from others experience that this is not always the case.

I was very lucky to meet Dympna Watson through my sister and she has become a good friend. Through Dympna I've become aware of Europa Donna's activities and have now joined the committee and look forward to making a difference and ensuring the best possible care for breast cancer survivors in Ireland.
